In Peppermint Sticks we see Christensen creating a stark contrast between a glistening silver cup with peppermint sticks inside, and a dark green bottle with a lit match resting on top. At first glance, this image appears to merely show found objects assembled together. However, the cold silver cup combined with traditionally “cold-weather” peppermint sticks serves a seasonal representation for winter while the green, organic-colored bottle and vibrantly hot match represent the warmth and flourishing nature of summer. When seated together on a table that appears less than a foot wide, the subconscious tension between the two is in full force.
Christensen’s work is known and admired throughout the Midwest. While originally based in Lincoln, Nebraska, Christensen currently lives and works out of Denver, Colorado. His work can be seen in many public and private collections including the Museum of Nebraska Art.
