Based on a drawing made in 1938 from southern Arkansas, Thomas Hart Benton captures a traditional southern farm scene in most romantic way possible. As the man plows and the woman sows, the curvature of their bodies and repetitive motions mimic the surrounding landscape. Flowing patterns of grass, logs, trees, and sky give the picture an almost “wave” like quality in a terrestrial environment.

The work of Thomas Hart Benton can be found in numerous, prestigious collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Art Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and many others.
