For centuries, the fine art world remained a male dominated space, with few opportunities for women to fully explore the realms of painting, printing or sculpting. Over the past 150 years many trailblazing women have led the progression of equal rights and access to fine arts abroad and at home.
Within Nebraska, colleges and universities opened a door into the fine art profession for many women in the early 20th century. As visible in their works from this era, many of the prominent woman artist’s in Nebraska at this time possessed a mastery of impressionist artistic styles coming out of Europe and were able to seamlessly blend that new-found style into the urban and agrarian subjects that surrounded them.
Through the decades, a transition toward a uniquely American style of realism became visible in the work of many female artists during the Works Progress Administration of the 1930’s and later into abstract and abstract expressionist movements of the 1950’s and 1960’s. Today, an endless expanse of varying artistic styles from women in Nebraska reflects both the artistic heritage found in our state, as well as the unbounded possibilities of what women will create in our future’s fine art scene.
